Book Review: “The Biology of Belief,” by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D.

Book review: The Biology of Belief

“The environment that surrounds us and the thoughts that fill our mind, create chemical reactions in our body that determine our biology.” — Bruce Lipton

Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles

If you're looking to deepen your understanding of the mind-body connection and the incredible potential of your consciousness to influence your health and well-being, I highly recommend "The Biology of Belief." This book is not just about learning; it’s about empowering ourselves to create healthier, happier lives.

As a hypnotherapist and mindfulness coach, I appreciate how Dr. Lipton’s work provides credible scientific validation for the transformative work I do with my clients. In fact, Dr. Lipton suggests that the three most effective ways to change our beliefs are

1) Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis,

2) Repetition (i.e. listening to your hypnotic audio on a daily basis), and

3) Energy Psychology (i.e. HeartMath coaching, mindfulness training, and similar methods).

The Science of Epigenetics

A person's health isn't generally a reflection of genes, but how their environment is influencing them. Genes are the direct cause of less than 1 percent of diseases; 99 percent is how we respond to the world. — Bruce Lipton

Bruce Lipton is a renowned cellular biologist. In this book, he introduces us to the world of “epigenetics,” the study of how cells regulate gene activity without changing the DNA sequence. The prefix "epi-" comes from Greek and means "on or above". Epigenetic changes are modifications to DNA that control whether genes are turned on or off. Dr. Lipton demonstrates, through science, that our environment and perceptions can (and do) influence the expression of our genes.

This means that we can scientifically validate that our THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS AND BELIEFS have far more control over our health than we ever imagined!

A Personal Encounter with Dr. Lipton

My partner Kristjan and I had the opportunity to attend a three hour workshop with Bruce near our home in Bothell, WA. His talk was both inspiring and enlightening. He emphasized the importance of taking control of our health, breaking free from outdated systems, and creating what he calls "Heaven on Earth." His passion and deep understanding reinforced the transformative power of his ideas.

Dr. Lipton makes it clear that we are not victims of our genetics but rather masters of our biology, capable of creating a healthier, happier life through conscious intention and mindful living.

Why I Recommend This Book

  1. Validation of Hypnotic and Mindfulness Techniques:

    • Lipton’s research gives solid scientific backing to the techniques I use in my practice to change beliefs and perceptions. It's fantastic to see the scientific community supporting the principles that we’ve been applying for years.

  2. Reinforcing the Power of Intentional Practices:

    • Understanding all the ways our thinking affects our cells can help us reinforce our commitment to hypnotherapy and mindfulness techniques. Choosing to deliberately, intentionally focus on appreciation and gratitude affects every cell in our bodies in a positive way. Learning the science behind it reinforces the value of maintaining a daily practice.

  3. Empowering Others:

    • Sharing the principles from "The Biology of Belief" with our friends and family can empower them to take an active role in their healing journey. Knowing that their thoughts and beliefs can influence their biology can motivate them to engage more deeply with these practices.

Change Your Environment to Change Your Life

I couldn't agree more with Bruce Lipton's insight: "If your environment keeps draining your energy, it's like having a leaky bank account, where any money you're putting into the bank, such as by seeing an energy healer, keeps slipping out. You have to change your environment, including any harmful beliefs, before the energy can stay high."

In my practice, I often see clients who are making efforts to improve their well-being through various healing modalities but find themselves slipping back into old patterns because their environment or underlying beliefs are not supportive. It's crucial to address these external and internal factors simultaneously. By creating a positive and nurturing environment and working to shift harmful beliefs, we can ensure that the energy and benefits gained from healing practices are maintained and built upon. This holistic approach is key to sustained health and transformation.

For those on a healing journey, or for coaches and therapists, The Biology of Belief is an invaluable resource. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the science of epigenetics and the incredible potential of the mind to influence our health and well-being.
